Philip Theis, K3TUF for ARRL EPA Section Manager 2012
"I love all aspects of this hobby and want to keep it exciting for generations to come." Here are some highlights of K3TUF amateur radio operations:
Phil was licensed in June 1962 when he was only 12 years old, with the call KN3TUF which was later shortened to K3TUF. His passion for this hobby was kindled by his Uncle Carl Theis (W8BKH) who gave him a National FB-7 when he was nine years old. That simple event started his life-long love for HAM Radio. He continued to increase his involvement by reaching FCC General Class (Radiotelephone License PG-3-16401) and also Amateur Extra.
Joining ARRL in 1968 as a teen Phil became a life member in 1974. Keeping up with ARRL news has been a pleasure all these years as he reads each monthly issue of QST Magazine from cover to cover.
Before amateur repeaters were popular Phil pioneered the use of voted repeater inputs around Philadelphia (1968). He was a charter member of the Philadelphia Area Repeater Association and also served as president of the Germantown Radio Club.
Phil moved to Lancaster, PA to work for Ed Clegg as Radio Sales Manager. As one of his RACES/ARES duties, he delivered, by helicopter, emergency Clegg radios to Red Cross Stations near several towns in PA that were completely anniliated by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
For several years after, Phil was busy raising a family of 3 children and starting several businesses, which were all successful, so much so that larger companies bought each of the 3 businesses. As Phil's children grew up and moved out on their own, he decided to get seriously back to his passion, HAM Radio. He contests whenever he can and has all bands working from 160 meters to 1.25 centimeters. Consistently he places in the top ten nationally as a single-op VHF/UHF high power contestant.
He serves as a 4th term Vice President of Mount Airy VHF Radio Club (the Pack Rats), is a member of the Frankford Radio Club and SPARC, and belongs to RACES & ARES for 40 years.
